Thanksgiving Day is an ancient holiday created by the American people and is a time for American families to gather together. Initially, Thanksgiving Day had no fixed date and was decided by each state in the United States on an ad hoc basis. In 1941, the U.S. Congress officially designated the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.

The Thanksgiving holiday generally lasted from Thursday to Sunday, and in 1879 the Canadian Parliament declared November 6 a Thanksgiving Day and a national holiday. In subsequent years, the date of Thanksgiving changed several times until on January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament declared the second Monday in October of each year to be Thanksgiving Day.

In addition to the United States and Canada, other countries in the world such as Egypt and Greece have their own unique Thanksgiving Day, but European countries such as Britain and France are insulated from Thanksgiving Day, and some scholars have advocated the establishment of a "Chinese Thanksgiving Day" to promote traditional culture.
